The research opportunity
EASTBIO PhD: RNA Modifications in Eukaryotic Evolution and Environmental Responses
Research question
This University of Aberdeen PhD examines how spliced-leader trans-splicing (SLTS) and other epitranscriptomic RNA modifications relate to eukaryotic evolution and responses to environmental change. A central scientific distinction is between a molecular RNA change, an effect on phenotype and adaptation through natural selection; evidence for one does not establish the others.
Doctoral work and training
The student can develop a focused question with the supervisors. Advertised approaches include comparative bioinformatics using public genomes and RNA-sequencing data, long-read surveys of natural populations, controlled-stress microcosms, and molecular-genetic work in the established C. elegans model. These are possible connected directions, not a promise that one student will cover every lineage or method. Crustacean or algal work is a possible extension. Training spans multi-omics analysis, fieldwork and laboratory biology.
The academic host is Aberdeen’s School of Biological Sciences, with Marius Wenzel as lead supervisor and Jonathan Pettitt as co-supervisor from the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition. EASTBIO cohort training is concentrated in years 1–2. A 12-week non-academic PIPS placement must be completed before the end of year 3 and planned during year 1. Confirm the individual research scope, registration subject and primary work location with the supervisors and university.
Eligibility and application
Applicants need a relevant UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent. A 2:2 equivalent may be considered with a completed or expected master’s Distinction or Commendation; all applicants must also meet UKRI doctoral-funding eligibility. Applicants may choose only one EASTBIO project and should contact the lead supervisor before applying. Part-time study is limited to Home/UK students. Applicants needing a Student visa must study full time and live within commuting distance of the host school under EASTBIO rules.
The complete application and both official-template references must arrive by 23:59 GMT on 16 November 2026 (07:59 Beijing time on 17 November). Email the completed form, academic certificates/transcripts and references to smmsn-pgrenquiries@abdn.ac.uk; one reference may be non-academic, and referees must be outside this project’s supervisory team. Applicants must complete the anonymous EDI survey and include its response ID, and provide official English translations with non-English academic documents. No research proposal or unrequested documents are required; incomplete applications will not be followed up. If registered in Biological Sciences, the usual Postgraduate Standard is IELTS 6.5 overall, writing 6.0 and 5.5 in each other component; confirm the applicable band for the final registration. Original application instructions and form

EASTBIO PhD: RNA Modifications in Eukaryotic Evolution and Environmental Responses
Project fit
This Aberdeen doctorate connects spliced-leader trans-splicing (SLTS) and other RNA modifications with evolution and responses to environmental change. It combines comparative mining of public genome/RNA-sequencing data, long-read epitranscriptomics and hypothesis testing in C. elegans, with possible non-model crustacean/algal work. Its value is the bridge between evolutionary questions and RNA-processing mechanisms, with training across computation, field and laboratory biology. It is not guaranteed to be purely computational.
The recorded 2027 recruitment and three directly relevant 2024–26 supervisor papers give the project a concrete research basis; confirm the individual scope and award conditions. International applicants can compete for a four-year EASTBIO award with a fee-top-up waiver for successful candidates; the 30% international cap is not an admission probability. The advertised £22,437 for 2027/28 is an estimate. Application and both references are due 23:59 GMT on 16 November 2026, and only one EASTBIO project may be chosen. The project-specific part-time option is Home/UK only. Discuss the balance of comparative and experimental work with Marius Wenzel before applying. Current official recruitment route; International award and residence rules.
Research Problem and Doctoral Work
The project asks whether changes to RNA processing and chemistry contribute to molecular diversity through which organisms respond to their environment. RNA methylation and RNA editing can alter RNA/protein outcomes without changing the underlying DNA sequence. These processes should be distinguished from a DNA mutation, and a reversible physiological response should not automatically be called inherited evolutionary adaptation.
SLTS changes the 5′ end of mRNAs, including transcripts in eukaryotic operons that coordinate gene expression. Its occurrence outside operons raises additional functional questions, such as translation efficiency. The evolutionary history and environmental significance remain unresolved. The four advertised research questions are: how widespread SLTS is across Eukarya; whether it evolved independently in different lineages; how much epitranscriptomic diversity exists in natural populations; and whether changes can support phenotypic plasticity and adaptation. These are connected questions, not four guaranteed completed thesis chapters.
The advertised approaches are bioinformatic analysis of public genomes and RNA-sequencing datasets; long-read RNA sequencing to survey natural-population epitranscriptomic patterns; controlled environmental-stress microcosms; and CRISPR/Cas9/molecular genetics in the established C. elegans model. Developing experimental frameworks for crustaceans or algae is possible, not an already allocated species requirement. The student can develop questions within the molecular biology of evolution and will receive training spanning multi-omics analysis, fieldwork and laboratory skills. Neither a fixed specimen/sample collection nor a final sequencing platform, budget or computational/experimental percentage is published.
Scientifically, comparative presence/absence depends on data completeness and transcript coverage; absence from one dataset is not evidence that a lineage lacks SLTS. Apparent repeated origins must be distinguished from ancestral presence with losses and from annotation/detection limits. Natural-population RNA differences can reflect genetic background, cell composition, environment or technical variation. Demonstrating an environmentally responsive molecular pattern is weaker than showing a causal phenotype, and still weaker than demonstrating adaptation through selection. These inference challenges are useful questions for the applicant to discuss.
The field is advancing rapidly, but detection confidence remains a major constraint. Luo et al, online 10 December 2025, in Nature Methods 23:438–450 (2026), evaluated 86 tools across six RNA modifications and different sequencing chemistries. Its accessible abstract reports that several non-m6A tools struggle with precision–recall, quantification and biological validity; training-data diversity affects generalisation. This is an independent primary benchmark, not a supervisor paper or proof that one tool works in all non-model organisms. Benchmark abstract, figures and data/code context.
Oberdoerffer and Gilbert's review, online 2024, in the 2025 journal volume, explains that RNA-modification maps contain sequence- and capture-dependent blind spots and false negatives. It reinforces the need to report uncertainty rather than equate non-detection with biological absence. Only the accessible abstract/figure descriptions were reviewed, not subscription full text. Together these sources make validation and transparent comparison central to the project's value. Review of detection limits.
School, Programme and Field Context
The advertised academic host is the University of Aberdeen, School of Biological Sciences. Wenzel is based there and linked to the Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability. Co-supervisor Jonathan Pettitt holds a Personal Chair in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition/Institute of Medical Sciences. These are supported cross-school roles, not two equally plausible host identities. The degree is at Aberdeen; EASTBIO partnership membership does not establish a joint degree. Exact registration subject/code, the main working location and the administering school remain to be confirmed. The ordinary Biological and Environmental Sciences PhD page is relevant school context, not proof of the exact registration code. Wenzel current affiliation; Pettitt current affiliation; School doctoral programme context.
For an independent subject signal, REF 2021 Biological Sciences at Aberdeen had 18% four-star, 61% three-star and 21% two-star research, with 16.50 submitted staff FTE. This is a relatively small historical submission and should be read at that scope; it neither ranks the particular RNA lab nor establishes current programme outcomes. The school links ecology, evolution, environment and ecophysiology, and advertises methods/statistics training, cohort retreats and PGR conferences. The cross-school supervisor papers offer more project-specific evidence than a generic prestige claim. Official REF 2021 profile; Relevant training environment.
The EASTBIO award is four years, normally starting 1 October 2027. Core training is concentrated in years 1–2 with research focus in years 3–4 under the 2025-onwards framework; the displayed 2026/27 calendar does not confirm this intake's timetable. A 12-week non-academic PIPS placement, outside the student's own project, is mandatory before the end of year 3 and planned from year 1. The project's part-time provision is Home/UK only, and student-visa holders must register full-time. All EASTBIO students are expected to live within commuting distance except authorised fieldwork/placements; the university's generic distance-PhD option does not override this funded programme. Selection and starting date; Training structure; PIPS; Attendance rules.
Supervisor and Lab Assessment
Marius Wenzel is identified in the saved university record as Senior Lecturer; older search extracts call him Lecturer and older network pages Research Fellow. The saved staff page emphasises phylogenomics, comparative genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and long-read sequencing using Oxford Nanopore and PacBio. Its SLTS research theme explicitly links computational/statistical comparison across taxa with ecological change. It lists three current student projects; that is a partial snapshot rather than a verified total 2027 supervisory load. Contact marius.wenzel@abdn.ac.uk. Recorded appointment; Detailed directions and supervision.
Professor Jonathan Pettitt studies RNA processing and cap-adjacent methylation using C. elegans, and supplies the mechanistic molecular-genetics side. His university profile places him in SMMSN/Institute of Medical Sciences; contact j.pettitt@abdn.ac.uk. A 2020–23 BBSRC grant on the staff page is historical background, not a current scholarship. The wider lab's translational motivations must not be turned into a promise that this evolution studentship includes pathogenic organisms or drug development. Current research profile; Staff research and grant scope.

DOI: 10.1093/nar/gkag355. Wenzel is eighth of eleven and Pettitt last/corresponding. The abstract supports context-dependent links between RNA modification and developmental physiology; it does not establish ecological adaptation across Eukarya. 21 October: abstract/record only, PDF blocked; 22 October: institutional abstract and bibliographic/data/funding record actually read, not full paper. Pettitt is second of three (conceptualization, funding acquisition, review/editing); Müller is corresponding and last author. The work combines structural prediction with independent interaction evidence, without establishing a solved atomic structure or complete in-vivo function across taxa. The 21 October notes claim a seven-page publisher-PDF full read, but no raw PDF/transcript was archived here. DOI: 10.1093/nar/gkae321. Wenzel is sixth and Pettitt eighth/last, both corresponding with Müller. Association and functional evidence support a nematode recruitment-complex model, not universal eukaryotic origins or adaptation to environmental change. The 21 October notes claim full publisher-HTML reading, but no raw body/PDF is archived here. On 22 October Oxford remained at a security check; PMC abstract, selected Discussion and author contributions and institutional bibliography were actually read, not the whole paper. Original publisher article; Current primary-text record.
The 2024 paper acknowledges Aberdeen's genome-enabled sequencing centre and proteomics support; the 2026 record also acknowledges Maxwell high-performance computing. The official CGEBM facility combines genomic technologies, short/long-read and related analysis with researcher training. This supports local capability, not unlimited free sequencing or reserved computing access. Confirm sample/data access, technical charges, storage, supervisor division and meeting frequency. It would be misleading to infer guaranteed lab capacity from past publications. Demonstrated shared research infrastructure; Official genomics facility.
Funding, Application, and Living Cost
The advert offers a four-year competitive EASTBIO studentship, open to UK/international applicants, with international students capped at 30% of the intake. The saved 25 October official FAQ confirms that successful international candidates will not be charged the overseas tuition top-up; this fee waiver complements the Home-rate fee contribution. Applicants educated in China are therefore not excluded by nationality, but grade equivalence and individual fee status still matter. Admission or supervisor nomination is not an award; obtain all four years of fee/stipend terms in writing. International funding and fee waiver.
The advert estimates £22,437 tax-free stipend for 2027/28; the final rate and actual payment schedule remain unconfirmed; this is not confirmed personal monthly income. £5,000/year in years 1–3, £1,500 in year 4 and £230/year travel/conference funding are research/training support, not personal living income. Visa and health surcharges are excluded. Long-read sequencing, natural-population samples and non-model experimental work can compete for this budget; ask what is already funded and what is optional rather than assuming every advertised avenue is affordable.
Relevant UK 2:1 honours or international equivalent is the stated threshold; 2:2 plus Masters Distinction or Commendation may be considered. Contact the lead supervisor first and select one EASTBIO project across the partnership. The project's instructions name smmsn-pgrenquiries@abdn.ac.uk, with one email subject “EASTBIO Application – [Your Name]”, containing the completed form, academic certificates/transcripts and two official-template references, one of which may be non-academic. Separately submitted references use “EASTBIO Reference – [Your Name]” to the same address. Both references and the application must arrive 23:59 GMT on 16 November 2026, or 07:59 China Standard Time on 17 November. No research proposal is required; unnecessary school certificates, conference papers or dissertations and incomplete applications will not be considered, and missing documents will not be chased.
The saved 25 October central application page and FAQ require the EDI survey response ID, prescribed-template references from outside the project's supervisory team, and original non-English academic documents with official translations. The page confirms the 16 November deadline and 2027 forms; the exact clock and local mailbox come from this project advert. The exact advert excludes extra documents, so do not attach an unrequested CV or proposal. The ordinary school PhD page instead lists sbspgadmin@abdn.ac.uk as its general contact; this does not prove that the project-specific SMMSN submission address is wrong, but the cross-school administrative route should be confirmed before submission. Do not substitute a generic portal or different institution's reference extension. Normally one nominee is selected per project, then a partnership panel shortlists and interviews with a presentation on earlier research; nomination is not guaranteed funding. Central materials and one-project limit; Selection stages; Ordinary school administrative contact.
For Biological Sciences registration, the official Postgraduate Standard table saved on 25 October 2026 gives IELTS 6.5 overall, writing 6.0, reading/listening/speaking 5.5. Valid One Skill Retake is accepted and certification normally must be within two years before course commencement. Other approved evidence or exemptions may apply; IELTS is not the only route. This is different from SMMSN Higher, which requires reading 6.0. Because the co-supervisor/admin route crosses schools, confirm the final registered programme's language band and Chinese degree equivalence rather than silently applying the co-supervisor's school standard. EASTBIO permits applying before an English test, but final university conditions still apply. Current official school-specific English standards.
Aberdeen's published minimum is £1,171/month including rent, or £14,052 over 12 months. This is a dated planning minimum, not a measured city average or a 2027 quote. It cannot establish personal savings against an unconfirmed future stipend; budget separately for immigration, relocation and unusual expenses. Living-cost guidance.
The 2026/27 accommodation examples are £111/week at Adam Smith, £133 for a room with shared bathroom or £191 ensuite at Elphinstone, with 40–50-week contracts and WiFi. At £133, a 50-week contract costs £6,650 and leaves two weeks to cover. Non-rent spending needs an individual budget; no unsupported monthly total or savings forecast is assumed. Check room allocation, utility inclusions, worksite travel and 2027 prices. Current housing rates and lease lengths.
The government figures recorded on 25 October 2026 are £558 for the Student visa application and £776/year for student IHS. If immigration permission entails 4.5 chargeable years, the example total is £4,050 upfront, excluding flights/deposits; exact CAS duration and future prices determine the charge. The recorded outside-London maintenance requirement is £10,539 over nine months, not a twelve-month personal budget. Check sponsorship/document requirements for the individual application. Visa fee; IHS charging; Maintenance evidence.
Applicant Fit and Preparation
The formal academic and final English conditions are requirements. The project offers training in computation, field and laboratory methods, so previous independent mastery of long-read sequencing or C. elegans editing is not stated as compulsory. Useful foundations include evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or quantitative biology. It is particularly suited to someone willing to connect organism-level questions with sequencing and experimental evidence; neither a purely wet-lab nor purely computational allocation is guaranteed.
Suggested preparation is a short comparison of biological absence versus non-detection, plasticity versus adaptation, and RNA modification versus DNA variation. Explain an earlier research analysis with its quality limits and how a result could be tested independently. Familiarity with reproducible analysis, statistics and sequence-data provenance is useful; there is no advertised mandatory programming language. A short discussion outline can help supervisor contact, but it is not an extra proposal to attach to the formal application. Avoid promising a complete survey of all Eukarya within one doctorate.
Career value
Useful career assets would be reproducible comparative genomics, multi-omics analysis and experimentally informed interpretation. The National Careers Service describes research/product-development routes in biotechnology, with a broad £27,000–£57,000 starter-to-experienced range. This is occupational context, not a PhD graduate salary guarantee. No project-specific placement/employment outcomes were found; transfer to industry depends on the actual software, statistics and evidence portfolio built during the doctorate. Biotechnology career evidence.
Next Actions and Questions to Verify
Before applying
Contact Wenzel about the first comparative question, the likely balance of bioinformatics and C. elegans work, and whether crustacean/algal work is optional. Confirm the exact degree registration, school-specific English and Chinese grade equivalence, and project-specific email routing. Choose one EASTBIO project, complete EDI and give both referees the template and the same 23:59 GMT deadline.
At interview
Ask how incomplete public datasets and phylogenetic non-independence will affect evolutionary conclusions, and how RNA-modification signals will be validated across taxa. Clarify how environmental response, phenotypic effect and adaptation will be distinguished. Discuss available natural-population samples, sequencing/HPC budgets and support, a tractable fallback scope, supervisor division/current capacity and placement scheduling.
Before accepting
Obtain the final 2027/28 stipend and written four-year international fee waiver, plus actual sequencing, fieldwork, travel and placement support. Confirm the working location, progression rules, data/ethics governance and updated training calendar. Resolve housing contract gaps, commuting, visa/CAS/IHS and upfront relocation funds. The Home-only part-time clause must not be presented as an option for a Chinese student requiring a Student visa.
