The research opportunity
PhD: Temperature Control of Stomatal Development in Arabidopsis and Barley
Research question
This University of Dundee PhD, hosted by the School of Life Sciences and Plant Sciences division, studies how temperature affects stomatal development. Stomata mediate gas exchange and water loss. In Arabidopsis, warmer conditions can alter stomatal formation, but the role of plant hormones, the tissues and cell types involved, and whether related regulation occurs in barley remain open questions. The project is based at the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie; Dundee awards the degree.
Doctoral work and training
The work has three aims: test key plant hormones in temperature-controlled stomatal formation in Arabidopsis; identify the tissues and cell types where the signals act; and explore whether comparable regulation operates in barley. Training includes genetics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, advanced confocal microscopy, omics, experimental design and statistics. These are training opportunities, not a requirement to arrive proficient in every method, and the project does not promise a heat-tolerant or higher-yielding cultivar.
School and supervisors
Martin Balcerowicz is the principal supervisor and Sarah McKim the second supervisor. The James Hutton Institute is the research environment; the University of Dundee is the degree-awarding institution. EastBio provides funding and cohort training, including a mandatory three-month professional placement. The placement host, timing and expenses need confirmation.
Application and eligibility
The project listing gives a deadline of 16 November 2026 but no closing time or time zone. Whether applications are still being accepted is unconfirmed. The project expects a relevant Honours- or Master's-equivalent background. EastBio normally uses a 2:1 or international equivalent and does not universally require a master's; Dundee's China research-entry guidance generally expects master's-level study and research experience. Individual equivalence is for Dundee to assess. The Life Sciences research programme lists IELTS 6.5 overall, Reading and Listening 5.5, and Speaking and Writing 6.0; confirm the evidence required in the formal offer.
The 2027 EastBio instructions require the EastBio application form and transcripts by email to EASTBIOapplications@dundee.ac.uk, plus the anonymous EDI survey response number. Two referees must send the prescribed form directly to that address. The FAQ says extra documents such as a CV are not considered, project supervisors cannot be referees, and candidates may select only one EastBio project. Check the current instructions and linked forms before submission.
Funding and points to confirm
This is a competitive four-year EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Landscape Award open to UK and international applicants. If awarded, it provides a UKRI-rate stipend and Home tuition, with Dundee covering the Home–International fee difference; the programme includes mandatory training and a three-month placement. The international cap is 30% of the network intake, not an individual award probability. The personal award and 2027–28 stipend are not specified; visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs are excluded. The project page says September 2027 entry while the network timetable says 1 October; confirm registration and stipend start separately. Access to facilities, mutants, barley resources and placement arrangements also needs discussion.

PhD: Temperature Control of Stomatal Development in Arabidopsis and Barley
Research Question and Applicant Fit
How does a warmer environment change the developmental decision to make a stomatal pore? This Dundee doctorate tests hormone involvement and the cells where it acts, then explores whether related regulation operates in barley. It combines plant genetics, quantitative imaging and cereal biology. Four-year EastBio support has an explicit international tuition-top-up waiver, but overseas candidates compete within a 30% annual cohort cap. The Dundee EastBio project page lists a 16 November 2026 deadline; current application availability is unconfirmed. Confirm current availability, Chinese-degree recognition and the specific September 2027 versus network 1 October start. Project, Dundee application instructions.
Research Problem and Doctoral Work
The project asks how temperature and plant hormones jointly regulate the formation of stomata, and whether mechanisms found in Arabidopsis also operate in barley. Stomata mediate carbon uptake and evaporative water loss. Changing their development can therefore affect competing physiological functions, rather than simply making a crop more drought-resistant. The advertised work is about the formation of these structures; the rapid opening or closing of existing pores is a related but different process. Official project.
Three advertised aims provide a clear structure: test the involvement of key hormones in temperature-controlled stomatal formation in Arabidopsis; locate the tissues and cell types where those signals act; and explore conservation in barley. The project offers genetics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, advanced confocal microscopy and omics training, together with experimental design and statistics. It does not specify a particular hormone as an already established answer, promise a commercial cultivar, or require that every offered technique be mastered before admission.
A useful preparation framework would distinguish stomatal density from stomatal index and total leaf expansion, developmental changes from pore aperture, and temperature effects from humidity, light, plant age and general growth. This is analytical advice, not an additional official work package or admissions checklist. Tissue-specific evidence is valuable because a whole-plant hormone phenotype does not establish which cells produce or receive a signal. The older Balcerowicz auxin study provides a relevant precedent in dark-grown seedlings, but is not proof of the new project's temperature mechanism or its conservation in barley.
The attractive scientific bridge is from tractable developmental genetics to cereal physiology. The main risk is that a strong Arabidopsis phenotype does not transfer to a different epidermal architecture or growth context. A defensible result could identify a context-dependent mechanism or a genuine limit to conservation, even without improving field yield. Clarify existing mutants/reporters, barley resources, environmental-control access and the smallest informative cereal experiment before assuming all three aims are equally mature.
School, Programme and Field Context
The University of Dundee is the degree-awarding university. The host is its Faculty of Life Sciences and Plant Sciences division, with the advertised research located at the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie. The Institute is a research environment, while EastBio is a funding and cohort-training partnership; neither automatically creates another degree award. Project location, Hutton innovation centres.
This distinction matters when evaluating the institution. Dundee's REF 2021 biological-sciences account reports the leading UK position under its stated Times Higher Education interpretation, with 71% of assessed activity world-leading and 28% internationally excellent, and 100% world-leading research environment. These are historical subject-level results, not a current overall university ranking or a measure of an individual supervisor's mentoring. The stronger practical signal is the combination of plant-development expertise, cereal research and neighbouring growth/phenotyping infrastructure. Being near APGC and IBH does not establish a guaranteed allocation of chambers, technical time or sequencing funds to this student.
Dundee's research-degree quality code provides supervision, skills development, independent progress monitoring, thesis examination and a viva. Obtain the faculty's actual annual-review and progression timetable: the present evidence does not establish every compulsory module or assessment month for the 2027 cohort. The four-year scholarship is distinct from any later academic extension, which would not itself guarantee more funding.
EastBio supplies a mandatory training programme and a three-month professional internship outside academia. Its training overview concentrates core/cohort development in the first two years, with later research emphasis and continuing training. This is not a promised rotation doctorate, industry employment contract or particular placement host. Discuss how the internship fits around plant growth cycles and seasonal or long-running experiments. The FAQ requires visa-holding students to study full-time and live within commuting distance, apart from approved periods away. The specific project says September 2027 entry, while the network timetable says 1 October; confirm registration, induction and stipend commencement separately.
Supervisors, Team and Recent Original Research
Martin Balcerowicz is the principal supervisor and Sarah McKim the second supervisor on the current official project. His team page describes a Principal Investigator and Royal Society University Research Fellow: doctoral work in Cologne on light signalling, postdoctoral work in Cambridge on light/temperature interactions and hormone biosensors, and an independent Dundee group since 2022. Current staff and doctoral projects show an operating laboratory, including barley thermomorphogenesis work, but do not establish available supervision hours, completion rates or access to another student's materials.
McKim's institutional research profile identifies her as a Reader in Plant Sciences. Her barley developmental and epidermal-surface research complements the principal supervisor's environmental signalling background. The 2026 IBH account also identifies a collaboration leadership role, supporting a link to the cereal-research community. These roles do not prove every omics or confocal method is personally supervised by both PIs. Ask who guides daily experiments, image analysis and barley genetics, and how responsibilities are shared when one model system is slower to develop.
Three Recent Original Papers and Their Limits
McAllister and colleagues (2026): Barley surface development
New Phytologist 251:1188–1208, DOI 10.1111/nph.71287. McKim is corresponding author. The original study combines barley near-isogenic/allelic and double mutants, microscopy, lipid analysis, localisation and expression evidence, with durum-wheat comparisons. It identifies overlapping and tissue-dependent SHINE/HvBODYGUARD1 functions in cuticular integrity and surface specialisation. The discussion retains uncertainty about the precise molecular function and notes species-dependent lipid effects. It demonstrates cereal experimental capability; it does not establish temperature regulation of stomatal development. The assessment is limited to selected methods, results and discussion in the publisher's main text; it does not cover all supplements or the full PDF.
Campoli and colleagues (2024): Cuticle and hull adhesion
Plant and Cell Physiology 65:999–1013, DOI 10.1093/pcp/pcae041. McKim is co-corresponding author. The original 16-page paper combines genetic mapping, cuticle-permeability tests, imaging, lipid/expression measurements and germplasm comparison. HvGDSL1 alleles affect wax deposition and hull adhesion, with tissue-specific outcomes. The discussion warns that staining can reflect tissue damage/permeability, and conservation in cultivated germplasm argues against simply attributing common grain-skinning variation to this locus. The relevance is careful separation of a surface phenotype from its mechanism, not proof of a stomatal hormone pathway. The assessment draws on selected methods, results and discussion from the original PDF; the supplementary datasets are not fully covered.
Ko and colleagues (2026): Translational control of cell fate
Science 391:694–699, DOI 10.1126/science.adx2867. Balcerowicz is a coauthor, not an inferred corresponding lead. The public original manuscript links thermospermine, methylated ribosomes and selective translation to xylem fate. Selected genetic, ribosome/biochemical and structural results support cell-fate regulation through translation. Its relevance is the need to separate RNA abundance, protein synthesis and cellular outcome. It is not a stomatal-development or high-temperature experiment merely because thermospermine contains “thermo.” The cited manuscript supports this assessment through selected methods and results; its final discussion is not fully covered by the available evidence.
The lab publication list separately labels reviews and method chapters; these have not been relabelled as three recent original discoveries. The 2014 auxin–stomata paper is useful older background, with only primary abstract/metadata inspected here. Together the recent papers support methodological capability across molecular regulation and cereal surfaces, while leaving the new project's hormone-temperature mechanism genuinely open.
Funding, Competition and Living Costs
The advertised award is four years under the EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Landscape Award. It covers a UKRI-rate stipend and Home-level tuition, with Dundee covering the Home–International fee difference. The current EastBio FAQ independently confirms the successful international candidate's top-up waiver. This is a positive funded route for overseas applicants, not an unfunded international fee gap. It remains competitive: international candidates can account for at most 30% of the network's annual intake, with institutional allocations and further selection after supervisor nomination. A project listing is not an individual award.
The Dundee EastBio programme page lists this stomata project with a 16 November 2026 deadline; current application availability is unconfirmed. It states £21,805 as the 2026–27 UKRI benchmark; the actual 2027–28 personal stipend remains unknown. The UKRI table also lists £5,238 Home fees for 2026–27. These are dated reference rates, not fixed four-year totals. The programme's research-training budget is £5,000 annually, reduced to £1,000 in year 4: it is not additional disposable stipend. Confirm its spending rules and the resources specifically allocated to the proposed barley work.
The FAQ excludes visa costs and the immigration health surcharge. Current official figures are £558 for a Student visa application and £776 per visa year for the student health surcharge; actual upfront totals depend on visa length and charging rules. They are not guaranteed 2027 prices. Placement expenses are supported under programme rules; this does not imply an automatic family allowance or additional employer salary.
Dundee's living-cost guide has several time bases. Its £10,000–12,000 headline is for 39 weeks, not a doctoral 12-month budget. The guide's 2026Q1 one-bedroom whole-property rent is £645 monthly and its September 2025 non-rent allowance is £700–800 monthly. Combining these as an illustrative single-person scenario gives £1,345–1,445 monthly, or £16,140–17,340 for 12 months. Comparing with £21,805 gives an arithmetic margin of £4,465–5,665 annually before visa, IHS, travel, deposits, omitted costs and future inflation. This is not a savings forecast or a 2027 quotation; house-sharing, location, actual availability and dependants change it substantially.
No employment salary, pension package or guaranteed post-award extension is advertised. Before accepting, obtain the funding letter, actual 2027 rate and payment date, full fee treatment, research/placement budget and arrangements if writing or experiments extend beyond support. Confirm the conflicting September versus 1 October start before committing to travel or housing.
Applicant Background and Application Preparation
The specific project expects a relevant Honours- or Master's-equivalent degree. EastBio's central guidance normally requires a 2:1 undergraduate degree or international equivalent and does not universally require a master's. The advertised genetics, biochemistry, confocal microscopy and omics are training opportunities, not a statement that all must be prior hard requirements. No fixed publication count, mandatory barley-transformation experience, required programming language or specified doctoral research proposal is established by the project description. Preparation in plant development, genetics, physiology and quantitative experimentation is relevant; these are fit considerations rather than invented eligibility tests.
For a mainland Chinese applicant there is affirmative institutional evidence, beyond a worldwide label. Dundee's China page explicitly describes postgraduate research entry, normally requiring a master's-level qualification from a good university and research experience. Together with the explicit international tuition waiver and Student route, this supports eligibility in principle with conditions. It also exposes a real mismatch for bachelor's-only candidates: obtain Dundee's individual equivalence decision rather than assume the network minimum overrides host admission. No universal Chinese percentage cutoff was verified.
The Life Sciences research programme lists IELTS 6.5 overall, Reading/Listening 5.5 and Speaking/Writing 6.0; confirm the actual 2027 offer and accepted evidence. Complete the Life Sciences pre-application; a general university application alone does not replace this step. The project-specific Dundee instructions require the 2027 EastBio application form and transcripts emailed to EASTBIOapplications@dundee.ac.uk, with the anonymous EDI survey response number. Two referees must send the prescribed reference form directly to that same address. The page links 2027 application and reference DOCX forms; consult the forms for their detailed requirements. The FAQ says extra documents such as a CV are disregarded, requires originals plus official translations for non-English documents, and excludes project supervisors as referees. Only one EastBio project may be selected across the partnership. Submit the required materials and references by 16 November; the page states no Dundee closing time or reference grace period.
ATAS rules include relevant plant-science research subject codes; China is not nationality-exempt. Whether this exact offer requires a certificate depends on its assigned code and conditions, which Dundee must confirm. It is an individual clearance condition, not a blanket nationality prohibition. Formal admission, scholarship selection, CAS/visa and any ATAS clearance remain distinct decisions.
Career and Transferable Skills
The IBH 2026 industry meeting documents an active interface with barley production, malting and climate-resilience research. It supports a realistic sector connection, not a hiring forecast or guaranteed placement. Transferable skills include quantitative microscopy, plant genetics, controlled-environment experimentation and reproducible data analysis. Crop-breeding or biotechnology careers would require showing how those skills extend beyond a single species or hormone pathway. No project-specific graduate salary or employment series was verified.
Next Actions and Questions to Verify
This is a coherent mechanistic plant-development project with a genuine cereal bridge, a relevant two-supervisor combination and a documented international fee-waiver route. Its value comes from the question and transferable experimental judgement, rather than a guaranteed crop improvement or an institution's aggregate ranking. The main scientific uncertainty is whether the relevant hormone response can be localised and meaningfully compared across the two systems. Funding competition and individual academic recognition are separate uncertainties.
Before applying, discuss the project with Balcerowicz and McKim, explain relevant research experience and ask what preliminary observations, mutants or reporters already exist. Use the confirmed Dundee email route and current 2027 forms; allow time for the EDI identifier, transcripts/translations and two direct referee submissions. Obtain an individual Chinese-qualification assessment where needed, particularly for a bachelor's-only profile. Clarify the unstated closing time and September versus 1 October 2027 entry. Choose carefully because only one EastBio project is allowed.
At interview, ask which hormone pathways are priorities, how tissue/cell specificity will be tested and how developmental output is distinguished from growth, aperture or cuticular water-loss effects. Ask about barley genotypes, generation time, imaging/omics support and access to controlled conditions at Hutton. Discuss a worthwhile fallback if the barley effect differs from Arabidopsis. These are proposed interview questions, not a claim that the team lacks those resources or has already committed them.
Before accepting, obtain the written international-fee treatment, four-year support and 2027 stipend, research/training allocation, placement terms and any unfunded period. Clarify the supervision agreement, progression calendar, contingency support and subsequent university registration. Request the actual subject code and ATAS advice, then arrange CAS/visa and self-funded preliminary costs. The network selection timetable is useful for planning but does not resolve every host-specific date. None of these checks implies an expired advert, a guaranteed award, or a guaranteed career outcome.
